MEET GORDEN WAGENER Mercedes-Benz Names New Head of Design

November 16, 2008 · Filed Under Mercedes · Comment

At the International Motor Show in Paris, Daimler AG introduced the new Head of Global Design Gorden Wagener.

At forty years of age, Wagener is the second youngest individual to hold the important and prestigious position of chief designer. An eleven year design veteran, Wagener succeeds Professor Peter Pfeiffer.

The design study ConceptFASCINATION was created under the leadership of Gorden Wagener and is being touted as the worlds most desirable coupe. The lineage is known in automotive design language as shooting brake. This is the first time that Mercedes is showing its own innovative interpretation of this concept.

Only a few days before the opening of the Paris Motor Show, Gorden Wagener put the finishing touches on the show car before it was shipped off to be center stage at one of the most important auto shows in Europe.

Gorden Wagener has worked for Mercedes-Benz since 1997 and as head of the Advanced Design department. Wagener is among the pioneers within the Stuttgart automotive brand who develop future vehicle concepts and work towards the realization of new design strategies. Wagener and his team showcased their ideas for the premium automobile of the future with their much-noted research vehicle F 700, which was presented by Mercedes-Benz in the fall of 2007.

Wagener studied Industrial Design at the University of Essen in Germany and later focused on Transportation Design at the Royal College of Art in London. He began his career as Exterior Designer in 1995, and joined Mercedes-Benz in Sindelfingen, Germany two years later.

In 1999, he became head of the Exterior / Interior Styling department, designing the models of the GL, M and R-Class with his team. In 2002, Wagener was responsible for the design of the models making up the A, B, C, E, CLK and CLS-Class.

The new Mercedes Benz Zetros

Some facts of the military version:
Daimler AG launched its new off-road truck, the Mercedes-Benz Zetros, at this year’s International Defence Exhibition Eurosatory 2008 in Paris. Zetros will be offered in a three-axle cab-behind-engine truck version (Zetros 2733 A 6×6) and a two-axle version (Zetros 1833 A 4×4). The three-axle model offers payloads from 7 tonnes to 10 tonnes, while the two-axle model has payloads of 4 tonnes to 6 tonnes.
The extreme off-road capability of the Zetros all-wheel-drive truck is unique in this segment, including especially its tactical and strategic mobility (air and rail transportability). The novel approach of a cab-behind-engine truck with its low design height and its centre of gravity behind the front axle provides an ideal platform for armoured versions capable of withstanding mines and ballistic attack.
According to Mercedes, its Daimler’s concept for the new off-road, all-wheel-drive truck series offers a number of key advantages over comparable vehicles currently available on the market. The new vehicle concept is primarily based on standard production line, all-wheel-drive components from the Axor/Actros series that have proven themselves on assignments worldwide and have been modified for off-road use, combined with an innovative cab module. This draws on the “Global Cockpit” and steering system of the MB Axor.
The integrated design of the Mercedes-Benz Zetros includes a level cab floor with a comfortable seating position for the 2nd co-driver and easy through-cab access. In addition, the low cab design enables the 4×4 and 6×6 vehicles to be air-lifted in transport aircraft such as the Hercules C 130 or the Transall C 160 with a minimum of preparation. Rail transportability is also assured as the vehicle conforms with the international loading gauge.

Mercedes Benz SLK 280 Promo Video

R171 represents the second generation of Mercedes-Benz SLK. Compared with the R170, R171 has larger dimensions.
The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is a luxury roadster built by the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz since 1997. The name was chosen to reflect the company’s intentions for the car - that it be Sportlich (sporty), Leicht (light), and Kurz (short). There have been two generations of SLK cars from Mercedes-Benz.
Like its predecessor, the second generation of the vehicle featured a retractable hardtop. Following the trend initiated by the R170 model, by the time the R171 was released, this had become an increasingly common feature in almost every new convertible introduced in the market, especially in Europe.
The SLK was updated in 2004 with a new Formula One-inspired appearance and serious performance; the new model also took design cues from the Mercedes-Benz Vision SLA concept car, presented in 2000. The new R171-platform SLK was again on Car and Driver’s Ten Best list for 2005, and it won the Canadian Car of the Year Best New Convertible award. Highlighting its potential appeal to women, New Zealand’s Lucire magazine announced it as its ‘Car to Be Seen in’ for 2005. The current SLK is built in Bremen, Germany.
A facelift of the R171, with more powerful engines and an updated front splitter was unveiled at the end of 2007. The SLK 200 now produces 135 kW (184 hp DIN) while the SLK 350 is upgraded to produce 224 kW (305 hp DIN). The SLK 280 and SLK 55 AMG engines remain unchanged. The SLK 280 will now be called an SLK 300 in some markets. The new models are expected around July, but can already be ordered. The updated SLK 55 AMG can be recognized by the blacked out portion of the front spoiler. A new Steering assist system is offered in which the gear teeth are cut at increasing frequency at either extreme to physically increase the ratio, rather than using power assist. Comand APS 2.5 is the new system which uses a hard drive based GPS map.
