. : BMW 7-SERIES ACTIVEHYBRID CONCEPT : .

Maximum efficiency in the luxury class, supreme dynamics in the hybrid segment - precisely these are the unique standards offered and combined with one another by the BMW 7-Series ActiveHybrid Concept.

Introducing this Concept Car based on the new BMW 7-Series, BMW is clearly demonstrating the potential offered by the most advanced hybrid technology available today. The BMW 7-Series ActiveHybrid Concept comes with hybrid components tailored precisely to the character of this unique saloon, offering driving comfort, everyday motoring qualities and driving safety of the supreme standard only the BMW 7-Series is able to provide.

In addition, the BMW ActiveHybrid technology featured in the Concept Car reduces both fuel consumption and emissions by 15 per cent versus the same car with a combustion engine and offers a standard of driving dynamics clearly exceeding all series models with hybrid technology presented so far. The BMW 7-Series ActiveHybrid Concept combines an eight-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor developing 15 kW/20 hp and maximum torque of 210 Newton-metres/155 lb-ft as a mild hybrid concept. Electric power is generated by a particularly powerful variant of Brake Energy Regeneration already featured in the BMW Group’s regular production cars. The energy generated in this way is then stored in a lithium-ion battery fitted in accordance with the package of the car beneath the luggage compartment.

This electrical energy serves to supply the on-board network and, in addition, to boost the combustion engine under clearly defined driving conditions. The result is a significant optimisation of engine power and response ensuring even more dynamic acceleration whenever required.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology thus supports the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy in a particularly intelligent manner, offering even greater driving pleasure on less fuel as well as cleaner emissions.

BMW ActiveHybrid is an important building brick within the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy as a whole. Pursuing this strategy, the BMW Group has indeed introduced a wide range of efficiency-boosting features in series production throughout the entire model portfolio, thus achieving unique progress the world over in the reduction of fuel consumption and emissions.

Sales of BMW cars with EfficientDynamics since the year 2007 already exceed a million units. Accordingly, this broad-scale strategy lauded on many occasions through significant prizes and awards has led to a substantial reduction of average fuel consumption by the BMW car fleet.

Parallel to this trendsetting strategy, the BMW Group is developing hybrid technology along various lines for various vehicle segments. The objective of this elaborate development process is to create hybrid systems significantly reducing fuel consumption while maintaining the driving dynamics so typical of the brand, in this way living up to the great demands made of a BMW in every respect.

Pursuing this strategy, two models with BMW ActiveHybrid technology will be reaching production level in 2009 alone.

Porsche 914, Audi R3 and VW Roadster

Over the past five years, Volkswagen has continued to tease us with sports car concepts that never seem to come to fruition. Back in 2003, VW unveiled the Concept R in Frankfurt to critical acclaim and two years later, the wraps came off the EcoRacer, proving that the automaker was still kicking around the idea of a lightweight, affordable roadster for the masses.

In the interim, VW had two similar concepts that never left the studio, but when the Los Angeles Auto Show rolls along later this year, a new mid-engine coupe will be revealed, and this one actually has a shot at production.

According to Autocar, this newest concept aims to be a budget alternative to the Lotus Elise, balancing performance and fuel economy in a low-cost package. Sources suggest that the coupe will feature either a 168 hp, 1.4-liter TSI gasoline engine or a 125 hp, 1.6-liter TDI mounted amidships and sending power to the rear wheels via a seven speed DSG gearbox. If and when the production version debuts in 2011, the coupe’s curb weight is pegged at just over 2,200 pounds, allowing it to run to 60 in under seven seconds while still returning over 55 mpg.

If the project is given the green light, the same architecture that underpins the VW variant could form he basis for the oft-rumored and continually denied Audi R4. And with Porsche’s stake in V-Dub, that means a 914 successor is just a badge and prayer away. autoblog.com

2010 New VW Golf GTI Concept First Details

December 24, 2008 · Filed Under Volkswagen · Comment

More @ http://on9now.com

VW has released 16 fresh images and first details of the GTI Concept which debuts next week in Paris. Building on what was previous stated, the GTI Concept receives Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC). The ACC aids the already stiffened sport suspension with electronically controlled pneumatic dampeners which have three ride level settings ranging from comfort to normal and sport. Depending on the ACC setting and driving conditions, the ACC system also remaps the steering and throttle response for enhanced body control. Also, the new GTI concept features for the first time an electronic limited slip differential (XDS) which is linked to ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme).

The GTI concept is powered by the 2.0-litre four cylinder TSI engine currently seen in the Scirocco producing 210 PS (207hp) 10 PS more than the Mk V GTI. Despite the increase in power the new engine is still more efficient with 37.6 mpg (combined cycle) while emitting 178 g/km of CO2 compared to 189 g/km for the Mk V GTI. 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) takes 7.2 seconds before reaching a top speed of 148 mph making it the fastest standard production GTI yet.

Finished in typical GTI interior traits, it receives a flat-bottomed black leather steering wheel finished with red stitching and the sports seats with the traditional grey tartan cloth reminiscent of the Mk I and Mk V models.

The Golf GTI starts production in spring 2009.
